Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Key events preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
